* Measurement of intelligence
Feb.04, 2009 // arts + design, personal, ponders
Here’s something to ponder:
Is one’s appreciation/understanding of the creative arts an adequate measure of her intelligence?
Of course, there are other things as well.

Given that there is no one agreed upon definition of intelligence, the answer to this question may depend on which model/theory of intelligence you support. (Unless of course you have pondered this question enough to come up with a new theory that surpasses all those previously conceptualized). Gardiner’s theory of multiple intelligences is one of the leading models today. Although “appreciate of creative arts” is not distinctly labeled as one of the 8 categories, I believe it may fall partially under category 3: Spatial. Of course, intelligence is also affected by a number of other things including one’s culture. In culture’s where art is considered unimportant, it may not be (viewed as) relevant to those in the culture. In our culture, an understanding of the arts may be considered one aspect of intelligence, but as you suggest, is definitely not an adequate measure by itself.
